The Shiv Purana states that there lived a Brahmin who was very devout and had two sons and at that time, all three along with their sons lived in Ujjain. They glorified the goodness of Lord Shiva. At that time, there was a demon known as Dushana, who was terrorizing and spoiling temples.
When the demon came to Ujjain, the Brahmin along with other devotees prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Pleased by their devotion, Shiva appeared as Mahakaal and destroyed the demon. At the devotee’s request, he remained placed in the form of a Jyotirlinga forever to safeguard the city from harm.This is why it is that Ujjain appears in their list of the holiest cities in India.
